Reintroducing Nintendo’s Wii U

As some of you may already know, the next generation of gaming console are just around the corner, with the first to be launched being Nintendo’s controversial “Wii U”, since its announcement last E3 the Nintendo Wii U received mixed reactions to say the least. On one side developers rejoice saying it’s truly innovative marvel surpassing the current generation of consoles (Xbox 360 & PlayStation 3) and introducing a totally new video gaming experience while others say it’s not even as good as current generation of consoles.

But what really caught people’s attention was the fact that prototype controller for the “Wii U” showed last year took a tablet-like form, and was rumoured to have the ability for remote play - meaning  you could seamlessly switch from your TV screen to the tablet-like controllers’ screen instantly and continue playing. With the talk of tablet gaming on the rise it seemed that Nintendo used this opportunity to infiltrate the market, but according to Nintendo a controller with a screen had long been in development (Ah, the Dreamcast J).  Even the name “Wii U” caused a lot of confusion when it was announced, Nintendo's prior E3 presentation seemed to focus entirely in the Wii U controller leaving people not particularly sure if it was a totally new console or just a peripheral for your current Wii console.

A few hours ago, during a live Nintendo Direct Video some new light was spread on Nintendo’s new console. Including confirmation on a redesigned tablet-controller officially named the “Wii U Gamepad” and a more traditional controller was also introduced, dubbed the “Will U Pro controller”.

The Wii U Gamepad will allow “asymmetric” gameplay, meaning each player can have different objectives, challenges and views within the same shared gaming experience. It takes the split screen multiplayer concept to whole new level. The Wii U Gamepad can also be used as a remote control for your TV and lastly it is NFC compatible. It also features front facing camera for video chat, and a web browser with the ability to view pages via your TV screen.

The Wii U Pro Controller is basically a response to the waling of older Nintendo fans - now hardcore gamers. It features two dual shock controls instead of the slider pads as seen on the 3DS, right and left bumpers and triggers and it has basically everything you’d expect from a regular controller. FPS fans rejoice! Nintendo finally gets it. But deep down inside when I see both controllers side by side a part of me fancies the controller with the camera, HD screen and NFC.
