Walka 7 and iDrifta Launched In Nigeria

On the 20^th of September DStv Mobile Nigeria officially launched its rumoured handheld television the Walka 7, the second instalment of the “Walka” series and the “iDrifta” the third instalment of the “Drifta” series.

The Walka 7 improves on the original Walka – packing a 200% larger screen while iDrifta is a specialized version of the Drifta adapted for iOS devices. The event was held at the Civic Centre, in Victoria Island, Lagos.

The iDrifta went on sale from the 12^th of September and retails for NGN 9,500 (Nine thousand Five Hundred Naira), while the Walka 7 was available on the shelves that very same day for NGN 18,900 (Eighteen Thousand Nine hundred Thousand Naira). The original Walka which was introduced earlier this year retails for NGN 17,500 (Seventeen Thousand Five Hundred Naira) so that's less than a NGN 1,500 (One Thousand Five Hundred Naira) difference. We are not sure if this is a special launch price or its actual retail price, but if it is maybe the Walka 7 may not have that much to offer.

iDrifta Launch Price Set for 9,500 NGN & 7 inch Walka rumours emerge

A few months ago we report about a new device for Apple devices that would be introduced to DStv Mobile line up of DVB-H devices in Nigeria, namely the iDrifta. Recently we received and update from our sources that a price had be set for the iDrifta that would be launched in time for the holiday season. A guess what they were right! An update on the DStv website showed that the iDrifta would retail for 9 500 Nigerian Naira.

 This gave use the confidence to talk about another interesting bit of new we’ve come across. I’m sure you’ve heard about the Walka - DStv Mobile’s handheld television. Well a newer version of the Walka is just around the corner which will be packing a 7 inch screen, that’s 200% screen size! That’s all our source had to say but with result of other predictions being correct we feel it seem legit!

A 7 inch Walka does sound awesome. This had us day dreaming about what we want in a 7 inch Walka. A 7 inch screen would mean it could have the option of switching between 4:3 and 16:10, maybe even a HD display? These days a touch screen devices are all the rage, so if DStv decides to scrap all those buttons for a touch interface I think that would be a welcomed addition.

Coverage Areas

DStv mobile is available in certain cities, although total coverage over the entire state is not guaranteed, these cities (which offer DStv Mobile reception) are Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Benin City, Asaba, Aba, Onitsha and Enugu.

Bouquets /Channels

DStv mobile has four bouquets namely Free, Mini, Maxi and Maxi Plus. Bouquet availability and subscription are dependent, on the device used to access the service. Whether a mobile phone or branded DStv Mobile devices. For example, Free, Mini and Maxi are only available on mobile phones while Mini, Maxi and Maxi Plus are only available on the Driftas and Walka.

Introducing the New DStv Mobile iDrifta

DStv mobile subscriber with Apple devices rejoice, the latest peripheral from DStv mobile is directed entirely at you! Allow me to introduce the hottest add-on to your iOS device, the iDrifta!

So what exactly IS the iDrifta? Well if its name didn’t totally give it away you probably don’t know what a “Drifta” is, so let me enlighten you. The Drifta is a DStv mobile branded device that functions as a receiver and decoder which enable you to view certain DStv channels via your smartphone, tablet or personal computer. Now do you get the idea?

So the iDrifta is a Drifta specialized for your iPhone, iTouch or iPad. Although only the fourth generation of iTouch and iPhone are supported but all versions of iPads are supported. The iDrifta is already on sale in South Africa and will be available in Nigeria Very Soon.

Introducing GOtv Nigeria - UPDATED 11.06.2012

So what’s Gotv?

Well some of you might have heard of it and others probably already have it, we are here to clear the fog. GOtv is Multichoices reply to its competitors who offer low costing digital video broadcasting services. GOtv is Multichoices latest franchise, like DSTV Mobile and your standard DSTV. Like your standard DStv dish and decoder, GOtv has its own model of decoders and receivers offering the same quality of reception you’d expect from DStv and DStv Mobile, using terrestrial digital video broadcast (DVB-T).

The Good

The first noticeable difference that GOtv has over DStv is that it costs only a fraction of what you would pay for the standard DStv. Today a new basic Dstv decoder, dish, set-up, activation and 1 month subscription will cost you about Twenty-Seven Thousand Naira (N27,000) but a new GOtv decoder, aerial, set-up, activation and 3 month free subscription will only cost you between (N8,000) Eight Thousand Naira and (N9,500) Nine Thousand Five Hundred Naira. It’s also easy to setup and very portable. 

The Bad

But it's not all sugar and glitter, GOtv offers only a small fraction of the channels offered on DStv. Also a majority of its channels are African based, but if you’re the kind of person who prefers local content this won’t be that much of a problem. GOtv only has a limited range of operation and depending on your location you many need to upgrade from your basic antenna to a larger grid antenna.

How to Use the Drifta 2 (Wi-Fi) on a Wi-Fi Only Android Tablet (Samsung Galaxy Tab 7", 8.9" and 10.1")

In this article I’ll be giving you a step-by-step guide on how properly set up your DStv Mobile Drifta on a Wi-Fi only android tablet, so let get started!

Understanding and Troubleshooting the Decoder App

Whenever you launch the DStv mobile decoder application on any android device it always goes through an authorisation process, in which the App sends “a small authentication request to the DStv Mobile servers”. Truth-be-told, this is usually where all the problems start.

As a precautionary measure,

• you should always make sure you tablet is connected to a Wi-Fi connection with internet capabilities before you launch the application, without an active internet connection at the application initiation the authentication process will fail.

• you should also assure that you tablet is not accidentally connected to your Drifta instead of a Wi-Fi connection with internet capabilities, your Drifta is not connected to the internet so if your device is connected to the Drifta the authentication process will also fail.

Tablet –Drifta Connection Walkthrough 

1. Connect to the internet with your tablets Wi-Fi connection, your Drifta should be preferably off at this point to reduce the risk of confusion. 
2. Launch the Decoder App, the application should authenticate and will fail to connect to the Drifta. 
3. Power on the Drifta, and wait for about 3 minutes then tap the rescan button, the Drifta will be found with the name “DStv0*****”. 
4. Select your Drifta and tap continue the application will connect to the Drifta and you will soon be able to view, your channels. Nothing to it!

PLEASE NOTE THAT ONCE THE DRIFTA IS CONNECTED TO THE TABLET VIA WI-FI YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BROWSE THE WEB AND CONNECTING TO WI-FI HOTSPOT WILL TERMINATE THE TABLET DRIFT CONNECTION.

Dstv Mobile Walka Review

Today I’ll be introducing you to the latest of DStv mobiles DVB-H enabled devices, the Walka. It’s a 3.5” handheld television screen and DStv decoder bundled into one portable device. Unlike its USB and Wi-Fi dependent predecessors the Walka is a standalone entertainment package  which is not required to be linked with any other device for you to enjoy what it has to offer. 

So if you’re the kind of person that hates having thumb sticks constantly protruding out of your PC; dislikes always having to dedicate your Wi-Fi connection to pairing with another device or thinks your mobile phone should best be used for the actual purpose it was intended this is the must have gadget for you!

The device is light weight and portable and it shares the same antenna scheme as the Drifta. The control configuration is intuitive and easy to understand, it also features the most comprehensive electronic program guide (EPG) I’ve seen on a standalone DVB-H enabled device to date.  On the downside its screen resolution is nothing to write home about, its only 320x240 pixels stretched over its 3.5” screen with 56K colours, needless to say it has a 3:4 aspect ratio (Standard Definition) display, sorry people no HD here.  But to do it justice its purpose built screen ensures less blurring because it does not need to resize the broadcast to fit the screen. Sound quality is as good as basic stereo audio output gets, though it does come with a pair of headphones, but if you’re like me and will settle only for the best you’d get some noise cancelling buds or clip-ob headphone with a bass boost  (you can never have too much bass!) since the device does have a 3.5mm jack. 

DStv Walka is a great device that does what it meant to do and does it well.  Normally I would have no complaints but in this fast paced techno world we live in devices these days are always trying to do a little more than we expect from them. We hear terms like dual functionality and multi tasking being thrown about a lot which had me wondering. Why not throwing an FM radio or an SD card reader so I could also view pictures and listen to music when I don’t feel like watching tv? A proper reminder system would be nice so I don’t lose track of time and still miss my shows. Lastly the ability to record my favourite shows if I’m too busy on the go would be an invaluable incentive for me to go mobile.

In summary the DStv WAlka is a great device to use to while away some time or catch up on your favourite shows or to stay updated with the times. It would make a wonderful gift and is reasonably priced, costing only a fraction of what you’ll pay for your average Smartphone. Although some tech junkies may feel it could offer more in terms of functionality, its simplicity will guarantee it a more mainstream appeal. Personally the device was something I fell in love with at first sight, and I would encourage anybody who has not yet tried the mobile TV experience to let the DStv Walka be your first step.
